Steve and Laura Macbeth are the first couple to have served as AEA volunteers for a second time.  According to Laura, “We fell in love with the people of Dominica.  Their humility and deep sense of faith was so endearing that the time we spent went by so quickly.  We knew we wanted to return.”    In 2023 they spent several months as AEA volunteers in the city of Portsmouth, Dominica where they worked with the women’s sewing program, providing English tutoring for an adult literacy program and serving in the fledgling branch.   “The people we worked with were so appreciative of our help that we consider this the most productive use of our time since we became empty nesters” according to Steve.  “At the same time, embracing a whole new culture was challenging for us but also so rewarding.”

In 2025 the Macbeths will serve in the Kalinago Territories of Dominica.  They will be working under the direction of the Kalinago Chief in setting up a much-needed supplemental reading program for the primary school age children in the Territories.

Steve and Laura are from Idaho Falls, Idaho and say that one of the perks of serving in Dominica is being able to enjoy its beautiful Caribbean tropical weather when it’s snowing back home.  Laura is a retired teacher and social worker with decades of experience at both the primary and university levels.  She holds a master’s degree in public health.  Laura has served as Young Women's President, in a Primary Presidency, and as a Relief Society teacher. She also currently works in the Family Search Center.

Steve recently retired from his role with the US Department of Energy.  He has over 35 years of experience in oversight and training in radiological energy safety systems.  Prior to his career in energy safety, he worked as a social worker and holds a bachelor’s degree in social work.  Steve has served as a Branch President, High Counselor, member of a Bishopric and is currently in the Elder's Quorum Presidency.  The Macbeths both currently serve as Temple Ordinance workers. They are the parents of six children.
