Housing Recommendation

This newly renovated home is located in the center of the Kalinago Territories.  It features spectacular views out over the Atlantic ocean and a consistent sea breeze.  It is walking distance to most services including a small convenience store.  The ocean front with beautiful crashing waves and waterfalls is a short hike down the hillside.  With 2 bedrooms and 1 bath it can accommodate a couple and possibly up to two small children.  Weekly grocery shopping will take you to the nearby village of Marigot or even into Roseau.  This is a fantastic opportunity to live in the middle of a really fascinating culture. 

Transportation Recommendation

A car is not recommended. Driving is on the left side.  Roads are winding, narrow, in poor condition with unmarked hazards and no lighting.   Rental car use would only be recommended for those that are experienced with Dominica driving conditions.  AEA has arranged with a Church member in the Kalinago Territories to drive you to/from Church, shopping and other locations as needed for a contribution toward the gas and maintenance of the car.  Depending on your project location we estimate that the cost of this car and driver option for multiple weekly trips would be less than $500/month.

Branch of Church

Your housing is in the boundaries of the Roseau Branch. The Church meets in a rented house in the capitol city of Roseau which is an hour drive to the other side of the island.  Current attendance is about fifteen.

Health & Safety Condition

There is no medical care in the Kalinago Territories.  Any medical needs would have to go to the Dominica China Friendship Hospital in Roseau which is about 1 hour away.  We do not recommend this location for anyone with health conditions that may require urgent care.

Handling of Expenses

The cost information about each location includes an estimated monthly budget as well as one-time expenses like airfare. Depending on your own lifestyle choices your expenses may be more or less. You will directly pay for all of your own expenses except for lodging. AEA has contracted for long-term leases for the housing locations and you will make monthly rent payments to AEA while serving as a volunteer. The monthly lodging rates shown in the budget above are current and fixed.  When you apply and reserve an AEA location you will be charged the first month's rent in advance as a refundable deposit. Subsequent rent will be paid monthly, one month in advance. The AEA Local Coordinator will show you how to pay any other local expenses.
