Housing Recommendation

This apartment is located in the cozy community of Laborie.  It is large enough for a couple and up to two children. It is directly on a busy street but is completely fenced as long as you keep the car gate closed.  You have direct access to the apartment without any stairs but there is a slope on the driveway.  There is a parking space for a car but parking takes getting used to.

Transportation Recommendation

A car is not required but recommended. The apartment is located about five miles from Vieux Fort center and the Church. It fronts the main street and it is very easy to use the public bus system to and from town except on Sunday when the bus system does not operate.   It has a reserved parking space if you opt for a car. Members of the Church are spread over the whole area. Transportation would be required to easily visit members in their homes. This location has the best environment for driving a car. The roads are better than normal and less crowded.

Branch of Church

Your housing is in the boundaries of the Vieux Fort Branch which is part of the Bridgetown Barbados Mission. The Church meets in a small rented building about five miles away. The branch has an average attendance of around 20 - 30. Currently there is only one set of Elders and no senior missionaries in the Vieux Fort area.

Health & Safety Conditions

St. Judes Hospital is the only hospital in the area. It is a rundown public hospital and not well regarded. Except for emergencies that can't wait, we recommend going to Tapion Hospital in Castries, approximately one hour away. This is the AEA location with the lowest quality of medical care.

Handling of Expenses

The cost information about each location includes an estimated monthly budget as well as one-time expenses like airfare. Depending on your own lifestyle choices your expenses may be more or less. You will directly pay for all of your own expenses except for lodging. AEA has contracted for long-term leases for the housing locations and you will make monthly rent payments to AEA while serving as a volunteer. The monthly lodging rates shown in the budget above are current and fixed.  When you apply and reserve an AEA location you will be charged the first month's rent in advance as a refundable deposit. Subsequent rent will be paid monthly, one month in advance. The AEA Local Coordinator will show you how to pay any other local expenses.
