Housing Recommendation

This apartment is large enough for a couple and up to two children, however we don't recommend it for children under 10 because it is directly on a busy street and lacks adequate safety barriers between the apartment and the ocean.  The apartment is on the lower level and enjoys the constant sound of the ocean waves breaking on the rocky beach.  You have direct access down one flight of stairs to the beach from the back patio of the unit.

Transportation Recommendation

A car is not recommended.  The roads are extremely narrow with numerous unmarked hazards and speed bumps.  They are especially difficult for someone not used to left hand driving. The apartment is located about one mile from the Roseau center and about two miles from the Church.  It fronts the main street along the waterfront and it is therefore very easy to use the public bus system to and from town. On Sunday the public bus system operates sporadically so it would likely require you to walk for a least a half mile to Church.  It does have a reserved parking space if you do opt for a car. Be aware that this apartment location does not have sidewalks along the main street which makes it extremely difficult to walk around the neighborhood.

Branch of Church

Your housing is in the boundaries of the Roseau Branch which is part of the San Juan Puerto Rico Mission.   The Church meets in a small rented house about two miles away, accessible by bus. The branch has an average attendance of around 20 with membership of around 100.  Currently there is only one set of Elders and no senior missionaries on the island.

Health & Safety Conditions

The Dominica/China Friendship hospital is only about two miles away.  This is the largest (300 beds) and best hospital in the country and has emergency services.   It provides the best medical care in Dominica.  We will provide a list of recommended doctors and clinics prior to arrival.

Handling of Expenses

The cost information about each location includes an estimated monthly budget as well as one-time expenses like airfare. Depending on your own lifestyle choices your expenses may be more or less. You will directly pay for all of your own expenses except for lodging. AEA has contracted for long-term leases for the housing locations and you will make monthly rent payments to AEA while serving as a volunteer. The monthly lodging rates shown in the budget above are current and fixed.  When you apply and reserve an AEA location you will be charged the first month's rent in advance as a refundable deposit. Subsequent rent will be paid monthly, one month in advance. The AEA Local Coordinator will show you how to pay any other local expenses.
